Tips for Building a GIS Portfolio

I’m a recent GIS graduate and I’ve been eager to dive into entry-level positions, but I’m trying to figure out how to build a solid portfolio. Does anyone have tips on which projects to include or tools to showcase? I’ve been using QGIS and ArcGIS, but I want to make sure I stand out to potential employers.

Focusing on real-world projects can really help you stand out. I included a small-scale urban planning project I did in QGIS, which allowed me to showcase my ability to analyze data and create informative maps. Don’t forget to tell the story behind each project and how you used your skills — potential employers love that.

Building a portfolio is like making a pizza – you want the right toppings… Mixing in some volunteer projects can really spice it up; think about working with local non-profits that need mapping help. Have you considered showcasing any maps or analyses you did in class, like @psmith84 suggested?

Including a personal project that you’ve tackled in QGIS can really show your skills. Consider something that highlights your problem-solving and data analysis abilities, like a neighborhood analysis or habitat mapping. What specific themes interest you the most for a project?

One thing that worked for me was collaborating on a community mapping project — it’s a great way to show teamwork and real-world impact. Maybe you could connect with local groups; what type of projects are you most passionate about?
