Finding balance between aesthetics and functionality

It’s a constant challenge for us cartographers to design maps that look beautiful while still being user-friendly. I recently experimented with a minimalist style for a local hiking map and found that cutting down on visual clutter helped users navigate better. How do you all strike that balance in your own work?

But , I totally get the struggle with minimalist designs. I tried a similar approach for a city map, and while it looked sleek, some users missed key landmarks. Maybe a subtle hint on important features could strike that balance?

I hear you on the minimalist struggle! I tried that approach too, and while it can look great, I’ve found that incorporating a few subtle icons for important landmarks can really help. It’s such a fine balance, isn’t it? @katie_lee78, how do you decide which elements to prioritize in your designs?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌

Focusing on a limited color palette can really help maintain that clean feel while still guiding users’ eyes to important features. I’ve also started using light textures in the background to add depth without being distracting. Have you experimented with colors or textures, @alyssa_p90?
